Pressure Equipment Authority

ABSA Design Registrations & CRNs

Alberta's pressure equipment safety authority — we handle the process end-to-end

Language

If your company supplies pressure equipment for use in Alberta — such as boilers, pressure vessels, pressure piping, or pressure fittings — and does not have an Alberta Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) to authenticate and register the design so that the equipment can be legally installed and operated in Alberta, we can help.

In Alberta, many pressure equipment designs must be reviewed and accepted by ABSA before they can be used, and the engineering documents must be authenticated by a licensed Alberta Professional Engineer in compliance with APEGA (Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta) standards, which are mandatory in Alberta.

ABSA

What is ABSA?

ABSA (Alberta Boilers Safety Association) is the province's pressure equipment safety authority. It administers Alberta's pressure equipment safety programs under the Safety Codes Act and enforces the requirements set out in the Pressure Equipment Safety Regulation (PESR).

01

Engineering Review

We perform a thorough engineering review of your design calculations and drawings to verify they meet the applicable codes and Alberta safety requirements.

ASME VIII PESR APEGA
02

P.Eng. Authentication

Once compliance is confirmed, we authenticate the engineering documents — a mandatory step for legal operation in Alberta under APEGA standards.

P.Eng. Stamp APEGA Certified
03

ABSA Submission & CRN

We assist in preparing and submitting the design to ABSA to obtain a Canadian Registration Number (CRN), allowing the equipment to be legally manufactured, sold, or installed in Alberta.

CRN Issued Legal Installation

Important Scope Note

Not every pressurized item requires design registration or a CRN. ABSA's design registration program applies to pressure equipment designed to contain expansible fluid under pressure, including boilers, pressure vessels, pressure piping systems, and fittings. Each component used in an expansible fluid pressure piping system must have a CRN as a registered fitting design. Some exemptions are defined in the Pressure Equipment Exemption Order and ABSA guidance documents — so confirming whether equipment falls within scope is an important first step before preparing fitting or vessel CRN submissions, or pressure piping design registration submissions.

Need Your Equipment Registered in Alberta?

Our licensed P.Eng. team will verify compliance, authenticate your engineering documents, and guide you through the ABSA CRN registration process.

A CRN (Canadian Registration Number) is required for any pressure equipment (boilers, pressure vessels, heat exchangers, piping systems) intended for use in Alberta. ABSA (Alberta Boilers Safety Association) is the provincial authority that reviews and accepts equipment designs. If you manufacture or import pressure equipment from anywhere in the world — South Korea, China, Germany, the USA, or elsewhere — you must obtain a CRN before legal installation in Alberta. Heartland's licensed P.Eng. team handles the entire process end-to-end. Contact us at 780-809-4700 or info@heartlandeng.ca.

To register imported pressure equipment with ABSA, you need a licensed P.Eng. registered with APEGA to review the design documentation against ASME codes (Section VIII for vessels, B31.3 for piping), Alberta's PESR regulations, and APEGA standards. The P.Eng. authenticates the engineering documents with their professional stamp and submits to ABSA for design acceptance and CRN issuance. Heartland Engineering has 15+ years of experience helping international manufacturers navigate this process. Contact our P.Eng. team at EOlive@heartlandeng.ca.

Yes. Our piping engineers are highly experienced in CAESAR II pipe stress analysis per ASME B31.3 (Process Piping), B31.1 (Power Piping), and other applicable codes.
